• Vaikom Satyagraha rose from the ashes of Non-Cooperation movement(1920-22).
  • It was a socio-religious movement started in Vaikom (Travancore-present day Kerala) against the upper class Hindus.
  • In Kerala and the rest of India, untouchables were not allowed to enter the temples. Also they were forbidden to walk on the roads that led to the temples.
  • Vaikom Satyagraha was the temple entry movement for the depressed classes.
  • T.K.Madhavan, a prominent social reformer and the editor of Deshabhimani, a Malayalam newspaper, was the original architect behind the Vaikom Satyagraha.
  • He moved the resolution to the Kakinada session of the INC in 1923,citing discrimination against the depressed castes.
  • Movement started on 30th march, 1924.Batches from the depressed communities barged into the Shiva shrine in Vaikom.
